From Goat's Milk to Your Hands: How We Make Mammy's Soap
There's something special about knowing exactly where your skincare comes from — who made it, what's in it, and why it matters. At Mammy's Soap Co., that story starts right here in Selmer, Tennessee, and it's one we're proud to tell.
How It All Began
Over 12 years ago, Michelle — the "Mammy" behind the name — started making soap while traveling in an RV. What began as a hobby in a small camper kitchen grew into something much bigger: a handcrafted skincare business with two brick-and-mortar locations and a loyal community of customers who care about what they put on their skin.
The mission has never changed: create "better for you" skincare that's free of detergents, harsh chemicals, parabens, and phthalates. Just real, nourishing ingredients that your skin will love.
It Starts with Local Goat's Milk
The heart of many of our soaps is fresh, local goat's milk. We source it right here in our community — not from a warehouse, not from a supplier across the country. Local goat's milk is naturally rich in vitamins, fatty acids, and lactic acid, which gently exfoliates and deeply moisturizes the skin. It's the kind of ingredient that makes a real difference, and we wouldn't have it any other way.
Wild-Harvested Plants & Organically Grown Herbs
We take our ingredient sourcing seriously. Many of the botanicals in our products are wild-harvested — meaning we gather them from their natural environment at peak potency. Others are grown organically, without pesticides or synthetic fertilizers. When you use Mammy's Soap, you're getting the best that nature has to offer, handled with care from harvest to bar.
Small Batches, Every Time
We make every batch of soap, jar of lotion, and bottled tincture by hand, in small quantities. This isn't just a romantic notion — it's how we maintain quality. Small-batch means we can monitor every step of the process, adjust for the season, and ensure that every product meets our standards before it ever reaches your hands.
There are no shortcuts here. Cold-process soapmaking takes time — the bars cure for weeks before they're ready. But that patience is what gives our soap its creamy lather, long-lasting hardness, and skin-loving qualities. Oil infusions and tinctures slowly steep, releasing essential properties, giving way to a concentrated natural product.
Made in Selmer, Tennessee
Everything we make is crafted right here in Selmer, Tennessee. This community is part of who we are. The land, the people, the ingredients — it all comes together in every bar of soap we make. When you shop with us, you're supporting a small, family-run business that's deeply rooted in this place.
Why It Matters
In a world full of mass-produced products with ingredient lists you need a chemistry degree to understand, we believe there's real value in knowing your maker. Our customers aren't just buying soap and tinctures— they're choosing a cleaner, more intentional way to care for themselves and their families.
Whether you're a longtime Mammy's fan or just discovering us, we're so glad you're here. Stop by one of our locations in Selmer or Adamsville, or shop online anytime. Every bar has a story — and now you know it.
With love from our hands to yours,
Mammy & the Mammy's Soap Co. family
