Valerian (Valeriana officinalis). The name comes from the Latin “valere,” meaning to be strong or to be healthy.

While Valerian flowers smell sweet, the Valerian Root when infused with hot water (to make an herbal tea) smells like “dirty socks” to some, including myself.  Hence why we like to tincture it. Tincturing helps sweeten the taste and smell a bit.

In Germany, Valerian is used in more than 100 over-the-counter tranquilizers and is the number one nonprescription sedative in Europe.

Valerian root is known for its sleep-inducing properties. It can provide a natural and gentle way to fall asleep and enjoy a restful night without the usual drowsiness of other sleep aids. With its proper use, it is highly effective in promoting sleep.

Valerian has been described as a nervine, hypnotic, antispasmodic, emmenagogue, nervous system tonic, sedative, stomachic, expectorant, mild anodyne, and smooth muscle relaxant, making it a versatile product with various potential benefits.

Valerian has a long history of use for a variety of ailments, including anxiety, stress, addictions, convulsions, gas, pain, hyperactivity, intestinal cramping, migraines, aggression, nervous exhaustion, coughs, epilepsy, and the flu. With over 2000 years of documented use, this plant has proven to be a reliable remedy for numerous conditions.

🌿As always, do your own research and educate yourself about all the herbs you are taking or interested in taking.

A peaceful sleep

After many months of waking up every 30-40 minutes each night, I finally found the magic sleep potion. I sleep solid for about 5-6 hours without waking up once, or having weird dreams.
I feel refreshed the next morning!
